Backplane Journal Privacy Policy: What We Collect and Why
What this privacy policy covers
Backplane Journal privacy policy applies to this site and to the email address behind it. Backplane Journal is a one-person blog about logging pipelines, message queues, build automation and home lab hardware, so there is no account system, no checkout and no mailing list. Reading an article here does not require you to identify yourself.
What gets collected when you visit
Visiting a page makes the web server write a log entry the way any web server does. That entry holds the requested address, the time, the referring page if your browser sends one, and a network address assigned to you at the time. The logs exist for capacity planning and for tracking down slow pages, and they are read by me, not published.
No advertising networks run here, so there are no third-party advertising cookies set by this site. Any storage a browser keeps for its own reasons is cleared by the browser, not by me.
What happens when you email me
Contacting me at [email protected] gives me your email address and whatever you write. I use that address to answer the question and to keep the thread going. I do not sell it, trade it, or pass it to a newsletter list, because there is no newsletter. If you would rather not hear back, ask and the message gets deleted.
Who hosts the site
Hosting and delivery are handled by outside providers, which process the same connection data any host does. Those providers hold it under their own policies, and I do not control that handling. Comments and analytics scripts stay off the pages, so no third party receives a reader list from this site.
How long things are kept
Email threads stay in my inbox for as long as the conversation is useful, then get archived or deleted. Server logs get rotated out on a short cycle, so old entries disappear without me sorting them. If a question turns into published work, I mention the situation only if writing about it reveals nothing identifying.
Changes to this policy
This page gets updated when the site gains a feature that handles data differently, and the text above changes with it. Anything new that collects information gets described here before it goes live. Old wording is replaced rather than kept around as a version history.
Getting in touch about your data
Questions about this privacy policy go to [email protected], the same address used for everything else on the site. You can ask what I hold about you, request a correction, or ask for deletion, and I will handle the request by hand. Wren Calloway writes every page here, so the person answering is the person who wrote this policy.
